Stephan van der Zwaard, PhD, is an assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam as well as a data scientist at Leiden University. With his background in both sports science and exercise physiology as well as data science, Stephan is able to work at the intersection of these fields to provide unique perspectives both in academia and applied sports such as cycling and speed skating. Professor Melitta Mcnarry of Swansea University has recently published a meta-analysis on the health and mortality (all-cause, cardiovascular disease, and cancer) consequences of an elite sporting career. Here, she discusses the findings and the potential implications.
