Q&A #46 - Rest interval duration and body composition benchmarks for elite and age-group triathletes
  • Should rest intervals be a fixed time or based on getting heart rate down to a certain level?
  • What are good target durations for rest intervals or good work:rest ratios for various types of workouts?
  • What is the body composition of elite triathletes like, and should age-groupers also use that as a benchmark?

Q&A #45 - Intensity unnecessary (?) for Ironman, warm-ups, lactate test timing, and adjusting a training week
  • Is it really necessary to do any intensive training when preparing for an Ironman? Can you just do base miles?
  • When is the best time to get a lactate test?
  • How should you time your warm-up for an Olympic race, considering wave starts, transition area closing and so on?
  • How do you adjust a training week if you are prevented from doing one discipline (e.g. swimming) but could supplement with another (or two)?
  • The impact of heat on carb/fat oxidation ratios (a correction to Q&A #44)

Q&A #44 - Carb/fat combustion based on pace and heart rate; VO2max intervals on flats or uphill
  • If heart rate was in zone 4 and pace in zone 2: did you use mostly carbs or fats for fuel?
  • Can you do track/road intervals on hilly trails, and if so, should they still keep the same structure or can they be free form?
  • Should mobility work count towards your total training duration?

Q&A #42 - Increasing swimming stroke rate, heart rate response to different bike intervals, and becoming less reliant on your kick when swimming
  • How to increase your swimming stroke rate effectively.
  • Why doesn't heart rate rise as much in very short and hard intervals as in longer and slightly less intense intervals?
  • How can you transition to becoming less reliant on your kick in swimming - particularly in the open water in a wetsuit

Q&A #40 - When to choose a road bike in a non-draft race, using half or full Ironmans in the lead-up to a big goal race, and making up calories after big days of training
  • How do you know if you should choose a road bike or a tri bike for very hilly races like Ironman 70.3 Nice?
  • Can you use half and full Ironmans in the lead-up to an important goal race or are you better off just training?
  • Should you make up all calories expended on a big day of training that same day, or can you make them up the following day?

Alan Couzens is a coach and exercise physiologist in Boulder, Colorado. Through his laboratory testing of a large number of athletes over a long time period he has found that triathlon and endurance sports potential (specifically VO2max) is far more trainable and less limited by genetics than what most textbooks and university courses would have us believe. In fact, most triathletes may actually have the potential to qualify for Kona - with the right training.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

-How trainable is VO2max really?

-Why do most athletes fail to reach their athletic potential even though they are putting in a lot of hard work?

-What is the right way to train to reach your athletic potential?

-The importance of training at the first lactate/ventilatory threshold (aerobic threshold)

-The importance of proper testing so you can do the right testing for you

-When to use heart rate vs. pace/power in training
